Folksonomies – Cooperative Classification and Communication Through Shared Metadata

This paper by Adam Mathes examines user-‍generated metadata as implemented and applied in two web services ( and Flickr) designed to share and organize digital media to better understand grassroots classification. It argues that factors favouring success of such systems include the lower costs for users in terms of time and effort and the rapid feedback about the usefulness of resources.
